In this dictionary, "modern" is defined as 20th century; thus, entries are quotes originating from people alive after 1900. If the speaker was also quotable before 1900, those remarks are included as well. Using the same format as The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1979. 3d ed.), this book consists of some 5000 quotations from a wide range of sources: arrangement is alphabetical by the names of the authors, and each quotation includes a reference to a printed source. The index, nearly half as long as the text itself, provides quick and easy access to quotations by keywords. Some of the authors included here are also represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. In many of these cases, however, the newer title attributes even more quotations per author. There are a number of quotations given first in their original (non-English) language, followed by an English translation. Song, book, and movie titles are also represented.
Recommended as a companion volume to the earlier Oxford title and a worthy addition to that often-used shelf in any reference collection.
