Poles, Jews, and the Politics of Nationality:
The Bund and the Polish Socialist Party in Late Czarist Russia, 1892-1914
By Joshua D. Zimmerman | University of Wisconsin Press (2003) | ISBN: 0299194604
PDF | English | 10.6 MB | 380 pages

The Jewish experience on Polish lands is often viewed backwards through the lens of the Holocaust and the ethnic rivalries that escalated in the period between the two world wars. Critical to the history of Polish-Jewish relations, however, is the period prior to World War I when the emergence of mass electoral politics in Czarist Russia led to the consolidation of modern political parties. Using sources published in Polish, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Russian, Joshua D. Zimmerman has compiled a full-length English-language study of the relations between the two dominant progressive movements in Russian Poland. He examines the Polish Socialist Party (PPS), which sought social emancipation and equal civil rights for minority nationalities, including Jews, under a democratic Polish republic, and the Jewish Labor Bund, which declared that Jews were a nation distinct from Poles and Russians and advocated cultural autonomy. By 1905, the PPS abandoned its call for Jewish assimilation, and recognized Jews as a separate nationality. Zimmerman demonstrates persuasively that Polish history in Czarist Russia cannot be fully understood without studying the Jewish influence and that Jewish history was equally infused with the Polish influence.

Merde! The Real French You Were Never Taught at School

Merde! The Real French You Were Never Taught at School
Angus & Robertson (1984) | ISBN: 0207149100 | 128 pages
PDF | English/French | 39 MB

Written by "Genevieve," who is identified only as living in Switzerland, this humorous look at French argot claims to be a "survival guide to understanding everyday French as it is really spoken." While there is certainly much for the casual reader to enjoy and much for lovers of France to commit to memory, the book falls flat. The fun of learning slang in a foreign language is understanding the sometimes mystifying, often amusing, literal meanings of those expressions. For example, according to Genevieve, an innocent, naive person is a oie blanche, a white goose, and to make love in a slow, conventional way is faire l'amour a la papa, make love like dad. Unfortunately this guide only erratically provides such literal meanings, making the book of full value only to those whose French is in good shape already or who are willing to paw through a conventional dictionary while reading this.

More than 225 countries are included, among them "new" countries of the former Soviet Union and territories and departments such as Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, and Saint Helena. The country essays can be as short as a page or as long as 12 pages for China, Greece, New Zealand, Uganda, the U.S., and others. There is a basic structure for the essays. They begin with the history of the country followed by the constitutional and legal foundations of the education system; an overview of the educational system; and sections on preprimary, primary, secondary, and higher education; administration, finance, and educational research; the profession of teaching; and a summary. The authors are objective in their writing, and the editor provides consistency in style. Tables, graphs, and pie charts from current publications of the World Bank, UNESCO, and UNICEF accompany some of the articles. These graphics do not identify the country to which they refer so it is only by checking the original source that one can be sure they appear in the correct entry.

Birds of the World (DK Handbooks)
By Alan Greensmith | DK ADULT (1993) | ISBN: 1564582965
PDF | English | 57 MB | 416 pages

It is hard to imagine a raison d'etre for this book, for its pretentions to be a field guide, as bruited on the dust cover, are absurd and are surprising coming from the authors, two highly respected ornithologists. What we have instead are species accounts of 800 birds, nine percent of the world total. These very brief accounts include a few sentences of general commentary; very small sections on range and nesting; a range map, color photo, and drawing showing scale; and one or two other small illustrations. This good selection of the world's birds, shown in quality photographs, is fine as far as it goes, but it is too limited to serve as an indentification guide. The traveler needs regional guides, and there are already many good ones for almost all parts of the world. Fun for browsing but otherwise only marginally useful.

The Words You Need: Student’s Book
By B. Rudzka & others | Macmillan Education (1981) | ISBN: 0333278291
PDF | English | 35.7 MB | 215 pages

The importance of words in verbal communication hardly needs stressing, yet no other language component has been more neglected in foreign language teaching than the lexicon. While a great deal of energy and imagination is going into the teaching of grammar, comparatively little is being done to teach words, and students of foreign languages, even after several years of strenuous effort, often know many grammatical frames but have very little to put into them. The Words You Need sets out specifically to organise the acquisition of language skills within the context of a structured approach to vocabulary teaching. The approach used is a completely new one, adapting insights from theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics to the service of the language learner.
